Antiproliferative and antioxidant activities of common vegetables: A comparative study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Epidemiological studies have consistently linked abundant consumption of fruits and vegetables to a reduction of the risk of developing several types of cancer. In most cases, however, the identification of specific fruits and vegetables that are responsible for these effects is still lacking, retarding the implementation of effective dietary-based chemopreventive approaches. As a first step towards the identification of foods endowed with the most potent chemopreventive activities, we evaluated the inhibitory effects of extracts isolated from 34 vegetables on the proliferation of 8 different tumour cell lines. The extracts from cruciferous vegetables as well as those from vegetables of the genus Allium inhibited the proliferation of all tested cancer cell lines whereas extracts from vegetables most commonly consumed in Western countries were much less effective. The antiproliferative effect of vegetables was specific to cells of cancerous origin and was found to be largely independent of their antioxidant properties. These results thus indicate that vegetables have very different inhibitory activities towards cancer cells and that the inclusion of cruciferous and Allium vegetables in the diet is essential for effective dietary-based chemopreventive strategies. ! 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of common vegetables.
Epidemiological studies have shown that consumption of fruits and vegetables is associated with reduced risk of chronic diseases. Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables containing high levels of phytochemicals has been recommended to prevent chronic diseases related to oxidative stress in the human body. In this study, 10 common vegetables were selected on the basis of consumption per c...

Objective(s) As an important class of natural products, coumarins exhibit many biological activities and the diversity of their bioactivity is so huge that the pharmacological promiscuity has been applied on their case. Oxypeucedanine also named as prangolarin is a linear furanocoumarin with an oxygenated prenylated substitution at C-5 of the nucleus. To our knowledge, there are few reports on...
متن کاملPotential synergy of phytochemicals in cancer prevention: mechanism of action.
Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is strongly associated with reduced risk of developing chronic diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. It is now widely believed that the actions of the antioxidant nutrients alone do not explain the observed health benefits of diets rich in fruits and vegetables, because taken alone, ...
متن کاملComparative Study of Three Wild Edible Fruits of Uttrakhand for Antioxidant, Antiproliferative Activities and Polyphenolic Composition
Ficus palmata, Pyrus pashia and Ficus auriculata are the popular wild edible fruits of Uttarakhand. The present study aimed to evaluate their total phenolic, flavonoid contents, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities by using two solvents namely 80% aqueous methanol and acetone. The results showed highest phenolic and flavonoid contents in the Ficus palmata acetone extract, while lowest i...
متن کاملRed Chicory (Cichorium intybus L. cultivar) as a Potential Source of Antioxidant Anthocyanins for Intestinal Health
Fruit- and vegetable-derived foods have become a very significant source of nutraceutical phytochemicals. Among vegetables, red chicory (Cichorium Intybus L. cultivar) has gained attention for its content of phenolic compounds, such as the anthocyanins. In this study, we evaluated the nutraceutical effects, in terms of antioxidant, cytoprotective, and antiproliferative activities, of extracts o...
